Poetry Competition: TRUTH

What is truth?

Anthony Anaxagorou - nominated for the TS Eliot Prize, winner of the Groucho Maverick Award, and shortlisted for the Hospital Club’s H-100 Award for most influential people in writing and publishing

In celebration of National Poetry Day on the 3rd October 2019, the library invited all pupils to compose a sonnet on the topic of "Truth".

The theme was intended in the broadest sense. From fake news, plagiarism, and truthfulness in relationships to being true to yourself, truth in the media, and truth in a religious sense – or anything else!

TS Eliot prize nominee Anthony Anaxagorou, who is our poet-in-residence, chose an overall winner across all year groups.

*A sonnet = 14 lines, each with roughly 10 syllables, and with the last two lines (optionally) rhyming. The rules can be bent though – as long as you stick to 14 lines!

Here are the best poems from each year group.
